Rising Tides Publishers Weekly Review

Rising Tides: Destroyermen, Book 5

The intrigue-heavy fifth installment in the saga of a temporally displaced WWII destroyer and crew moves from southeast Asian jungles to Hawai’i dueling grounds. Capt. Matt Reddy is faced with the dual tasks of breaking the treacherous Honorable New Britain Company and securing an alliance with the slave-keeping Empire. Doing so, however, incurs the enmity of the Holy Dominion, displaced colonial Spaniards who practice a blood-drenched sort of Catholicism.

While Matt struggles with moral ambiguities, the younger officers gain more responsibilities and face the fatal consequences of mistakes in command, and Lt. Sandra Tucker leads imperial heir Princess Rebecca and a boatload of Company escapees across a dinosaur-crammed Pacific island. Anderson continues to broaden the scope of the story, but never lets the philosophy drown out the action, tossing in a full-scale naval battle and a volcanic tsunami for the twin climaxes.

Model Contest!

We get a lot of contacts from folks looking for a model of a “4-stacker” so they can build Walker or Mahan as they’re described in the series.  Kits can be hard to find, but I understand Revell means to re-issue a 1-240 scale kit of Ward or Cambeltown (formerly Buchanan) in a couple of months.  Anyway, if you build one, why not show it off?  Send pictures of your completed model and we’ll post them!  We’ll establish a suitably lengthy “deadline,” at which time visitors to this site can vote on their favorites.  Winners will receive honor, accolades–and signed books!

Model Categories (with prizes for each!)
:

Scratch-built
–(Walker, Mahan, “Big Sal,” “Nancy,” or Amagi)–made using blueprints only, no kits.  Model to represent subject as described at some point in the series.  Prize will be a signed collection of all Destroyermen hardcovers to that point, including a “galley proof” of the latest!

Kit-built:
Walker or Mahan.
The winner will receive signed copies of the two most recent hardcovers!  Remember, each model must show the ship it portrays at some specific point in the series.  Don’t forget “post Squall” battle damage or repairs.

Additional categories may be considered.

If you have any questions regarding subjects “as described,” throw them out on the “Technical Discussions” blog, and you will probably get plenty of answers!

FAQ: Book Five News & How To Get Books Signed

After considerable confusion on my part considering the release date for Book #5 in the Destroyermen Series, “Rising Tides,” I’ve definitively confirmed that it will be released in February!  I don’t know why I thought it was earlier than that.  Too much going on I guess.  I always remember my anniversary too; but after 20 years, I still manage to “remember it wrong!”  Every year!!!  Must be some mental block!  Ha!

Also, I get a lot of contacts asking if I’ll sign books sent to me.  I’m honored to do so.  Get in touch with me through the “contact” feature, and I’ll give you detailed instructions!  (Please remember to send sufficient return postage!)

Destroyermen: Maelstrom (Book 3)

Lieutenant Commander Matthew Reddy, along with the men and women of Walker, are once again at war. Having sided with the peaceful Lemurians against the savage, reptilian Grik, they now find themselves scrambling to prepare for the attack that is sure to come, searching for resources to support their forces—even as they look for allies to join their struggle.

Meanwhile, the Japanese juggernaut Amagi, also trapped in this strange world, is under Grik control—with her fanatical commander approaching madness. And soon they will have amassed a force that no amount of firepower and technology will be able to stop.

As the raging conflict approaches, Reddy, his crew, his allies, and his loved ones face annihilation. But if there is one thing they have learned about their new world, it is that hope—and help—may be just over the horizon.

“Anderson has brought a fresh new perspective to the tale of crosstime shipwreck.” —–S.M. Stirling

ConDFW Update

Taylor is sad to announce that due to some scheduling conflicts with ConDFW on February 12-14th, he will not be able to attend. This is bittersweet news as he had a lot of fun last year and hopes to attend again. We hope if you were planning on going to the convention, you still have a wonderful time!

Please check back on the blog for any appearances Taylor may make in the future. Hard at work at in the finishing stages of book 5,  he’ll have lots to talk about once he emerges from the squall.
