Model Pictures: Bill Early

This is the 1/240th scale Revell kit of the Campbeltown. It was built to reflect the USS Walker during her voyage to the New Britain Isles.
I added a photo etched detail set to the basic kit. Scratch built details include the blower, Coke machine, 25mm guns, various deck and gun details, and the Nancy. The bridge area was also highly modified and detailed. Patch plates were added to the hull to reflect damage done during battle. Machined brass gun barrels were added to the main 4″ gun mounts. The Nancy was built out of balsa wood and sheet plastic, using the drawings on this site. The rigging was done using transparent nylon thread. The hull was painted overall Gunship Gray, with weathering applied by airbrush.

Very nicely done! I love the use of film for the railing above the bridge, and the patches on the hull around the forward fire room were a nice touch. The rigging was nicely done as well, and one of those things that I never was able to get to look right on models I made.
I have to say you did change one thing in my visualization of the Walker. I always pictured the Coke machine as one of the old all red jobs that was only about hip high with a top you would slide open to get the bottles. I think I may like the upright better.
Bill,
Speaking as someone who also builds models… GREAT JOB! I especially appreciated the work you put into the Nancy. I was also excited that your model pictures were posted on the website about the same time as my artwork was posted, because they both show the Walker from the same time period! I actually did the artwork in anticipation of building a model (based on the Revell kit like you did), but who knows when I will have time to do that. Anyway, your craftsmanship is certainly appreciated!
Thanks so much for the great comments. I had started on this before I found out about the contest, so the timing was just about perfect. It was a really fun build, and was the first time that I had tried using the nylon thread for the rigging. I liked the way that it turned out. It doesn’t look out of scale, and best of all, it doesn’t attract dust and look fuzzy like regular thread does.
Saia, about the Coke machine. I was undecided about which style to make, either upright or horizontal. I did an image search for that time period and most of the results were the red and white upright, so that’s what I went with. All the railings are photo etched brass from a set that I found online. You’re right, though. It does look like a film strip!
Brian, I noticed your artwork just prior to my sending off the pictures. I was amazed at how close the details were between the two. I think I liked your placement of the 25mm guns better than where I placed mine. The Nancy was a fun little build. I made 2 of them up at the same time. A buddy of mine in Galveston is doing a Walker up using the same kit, so I made him one, as well.
Thanks again for the great comments.
where did the designs for the nancy come from? I couldn’t fond them.
Hi Justin. I did a drawin (in Paint) of a Nancy for the cover of Rising Tides and they translated it pretty well. The one I drew is posted in the Gallery.
Bill,
I determined the position of the 25mm’s and other details directly from the auther. He was kind enough to answer a lot of questions I had sent him. Thanks Taylor!!
Brian
Hey guys, I’m still running around the country, but hope to make a quick decision on “the winners” when I get back. Also thinking about re-starting the contest since a lot of folks have told me they couldn’t finish up in time. What do y’all think?
Brian, about the 25mm, I realized too late that I had misplaced them, but I was running out of time, so I just shifted them aft. I’ll most likely go back and reposition them later.
Taylor, it’d be great to restart the contest. I think I’d like to do a really battle scared Mahan, just prior to ramming the Amagi.
Actually, as I told Brian, the confusion about the placement of the 25′s was my fault. When he consulted me, I was already focused on . . . later adjustments in the next manuscript. Nothing big . . . Anyway, you were both sort of right. BUT!!!! the Coke machine is the shorter, lid-top variety, (remember Lanier sitting on it? And Pepper opening the top to take out drinks in Baalkpan? Also, the amidships deckhouse is open fore and aft, without the later enclosure. It doesn’t matter, though. All the efforts have been outstanding and I am leaning toward re-starting the contest. I’ll announce the winners for this one soon–hopefully next week. The upright machine REALLY looks cool.
A pre-ramming Mahan would be cool! Ask for further details about her . . . slightly different configuration (in my mind, mostly) if you begin. My daughter wants to do a Mahan as a matter of fact (even though I told her she can’t compete!) Ha!
Bill and Taylor,
That’s just the natural course of things when you have to deal with so many details in an ongoing series. In this case the details were just given in a later book, but they did not contradict anything said before. So we have now established from the most recent book exactly where the 25mm guns were placed… on the #3 and #4 torpedo mounts. This makes things a little tight for the Nancy, but you can’t just put heavy guns anywhere on a deck. The old torpedo mount locations would already have all the bracing and strengthening necessary for gun mounts. I also used some creative imagination and assumed they would have modified the aft deckhouse from the original. I’m looking forward to seeing what might be put on the #1 and #2 mounts… I’m betting on torpedo launchers, even if they are for Japanese torpedoes (as has been discussed on the blog these were the best in the world at that time).
Anyway Bill, I modified my artwork (also corrected some other very minor details) and sent them to the author. They now look like your model!!!
Brian,
That’s great to hear! I was wondering how I managed to shift the gun positions. I tried to make some notes on the shifted positions of things, and I had marked them as being on #3 and #4. I used my notes and the dust jacket artwork when I started on my Walker. I did notice that the artwork on the dust jackets are somewhat inaccurate in the details, but are still some of the most outstanding designs I’ve seen! I can’t wait to see your revised artwork. Would you mind if I enlarged and printed out your picture? My wife got me a beautiful display case to put the Walker in, and I thought it’d be great with your artwork in the back of the case.
Bill,
I would be honored! Somehow we need to figure out how we can trade email addresses, because I’m a little worried about putting mine out on a public Blog site. That way I can send you a web address where you can download the originals, which will be of higher quality than what can be put on a website.
Now I’ve started “backdating” and am working on one of the Walker as she appeared in the Asiatic fleet before the storm. Hopefully I will get one done of her as she appears in each of the books.
Brian,
It just occurred to me that Taylor has our email addresses. Maybe we could get him, or his admin, to forward my email address to you.
I can’t wait to see the different takes on the Walker. I’m still thinking about a Mahan just prior to ramming the Amagi for the next contest.
