Rising Tides Publishers Weekly Review
Rising Tides: Destroyermen, Book 5
The intrigue-heavy fifth installment in the saga of a temporally displaced WWII destroyer and crew moves from southeast Asian jungles to Hawai’i dueling grounds. Capt. Matt Reddy is faced with the dual tasks of breaking the treacherous Honorable New Britain Company and securing an alliance with the slave-keeping Empire. Doing so, however, incurs the enmity of the Holy Dominion, displaced colonial Spaniards who practice a blood-drenched sort of Catholicism.
While Matt struggles with moral ambiguities, the younger officers gain more responsibilities and face the fatal consequences of mistakes in command, and Lt. Sandra Tucker leads imperial heir Princess Rebecca and a boatload of Company escapees across a dinosaur-crammed Pacific island. Anderson continues to broaden the scope of the story, but never lets the philosophy drown out the action, tossing in a full-scale naval battle and a volcanic tsunami for the twin climaxes.

I’d definitely read this book.
I’m going to read this book, but its the waiting part thats killing me!!!
got mine of pre order at amazon… no the waiting gets real bad
Taylor,
I just finished book four (i’ve been busy) and it was every bit as good as the other three. I really like how your expanding on the “world/universe” these people find themselves in. Once Bradford said there are other squalls and possibly an unlimited amount of worlds connecting, that was like “DuH” and “Oh WOW” at the same time. It really opens up the possiblilties. As a fan i would like to make a request, can you include more pictures of the creatures and places in the book. It really helps to see what your seeing in your minds eye, just describing it leaves a lot to me to put together and i generally will see something different. Also, maybe you could name a sailor Rafael Martinez, i haven’t noticed any hispanics on Walker. It sounds good to me, I just retired from the Army and would have no problem with a sailor with a name like mine. Take care and thanks for the enjoyable reading and keeping writing!
Respectfully,
Rafael Martinez
Who knows? Raphael is a good name! You haven’t forgotten about Rolondo “Ronson” Rodriguez though, have you?
Haha, I just started reading “Distant Thunders” for the fourth time and I’m still laughing at the part where it describes how “Ronson” got his nickname. The image of him running around like crazy on the gun platform with his hair on fire just cracks me up.
i just finish reading rising tides it was brillent i must say can not wait till the next one comes out
Just finished Rising tides, after the long wait seemed only natural to ‘devour’ it. I thank you Taylor for another amazing addition to quite possibly on of the best series of books I have read so far. Now just simply waiting for a tittle for the sixth book will be hard.
I am in the middle of Rising tides and just realized something with the naming of two of the minor Lemurian characters Cisco and Bashear. Is that any relation to Captain Benjamin Sisko and Julian Bashir from DS9?
By the way I love Rising Tides and the series as a whole.
Pace: I noticed that too! I was expecting a “Jat Zee’ah” or an “Hobrion” to pop up at any moment.
I vote a Grik be named “Ort Ssahnah’ohg”
Eben Bradstreet, is your Grik name suggestion another DS9 reference? I used to watch it and I can’t figure out whether or not your suggestion is the name of one of the main characters.
Oh and Bashear is human by the way.
“Worf, Son of Mogh”
Drop the ‘W’s, ‘F’s, and ‘M’s (Grik have no lips, see). Then make the last name one word and add some flavor to it, so that it reads a little more like Mr. Anderson wrote the Grik names.
This series runs through my mind like an epic motion picture, constantly moving from one scene to another allowing my minds eye to see the complete picture with a remarkably seamless weave. The action and the characters are second to none, and (quite selfishly) …I hope it goes on and on. Taylor, ‘Rising Tides’ is just …great work.
Mr. Taylor: Just finished Rising Tides. Another Home Run. Heck, it was out of the ball park, over the parking lot, and across the street. Was sorry when I read the part about the S-19 and the volcano, but what a great way to work the story. Loved the last couple of pages. Only problem is when we can hope for the next one. Any ideas on the title?

Thanks so much, all of you. As to the naming question, no, there has been no DS9 influence. I DID like the show, (shucks, who’s NOT a sucker for Star Trek?), but I’m afraid I never would have remembered any of the DS9 character’s names if you guys hadn’t reminded me. Carl Bashear is a long established human character, and “Cisco,” like many Lemurians, got his nic-name based on how his real name sounds. If there was any “this world” influence, my daughter once had a cat named “Cisco,”–because he showed up at the house in the engine compartment of my truck–and the last place I stopped for gas was a few hundred miles away in Cisco TX! Cats around here–the little kind–don’t last long outside, sadly, because of the coyotes and other predators. The ones that worm their way into the house usually get named the first thing that pops in my daughter’s mind–like “Taco,”
Book #6 has a full head of steam, and I’ll post the release date just as soon as I’m sure what it is!
Mr. Anderson. Rising Tides is incredible!!! You have got to keep this up. I am already waiting for the next book even as I reread Rising Tides. Thanks again.
Mr. Anderson, This series is wonderful. Your battle scenes are as good as any I’ve ever read, and I’ve read hundreds. Youe characters come alive with each turn of the page. Hope you never stop writing these fantastic yarns.
I thought that Rising Tides was awesome and can’t wait for #6 to come out!! Mr. Anderson is a terrific talent with a great sense of chacters and real life conquests.
I can’t find Maelstrom and Rising Tides. I was at Borders and
I couldn’t find them.
Finished reading Rising Tides a few weeks ago and I loved it!!! The best one so far and can’t wait for the sixth book.
I have a major bone to pick with you, Sir. You should have put a caution label on the covers of every one of the books in this series aimed at anyone with a predisposition to addictions.
Last week I purchased all five books in the series you have released so far and have already finished each and every one. Now I am in the early stages of withdrawl and am in dire need of a fix. I definitely have got the proverbial monkey on my back; and we ain’t talkin’ “Cat Monkey” either. I may end up checking into rehab before the next volume comes out just to get through this.
All I can say is that you better stay healthy, Slick. We don’t need you meeting some sort of early demise. So be sure to buckle your seatbelt; watch your diet; look both ways before crossing the street; avoid any contact with consumptives; watch for falling meteors; and for God’s sake don’t run with scissors!
And get the next volume out ASAP! (Please)

It began a bit slow (for the next book, perhaps have a list of characters, and a concise summary of previous adventures upfront?), but then the pace picked up and the story got better and better, with lots of things happening in parallel. Superbly entertaining, and the story can go all ways.
Also interesting is that, while only very briefly featured, the japanese advisor and the ex-gladiator Grik general seem, while not sympathetic, to act more like reasonable professionals.
and to think Taylor, I knew ya when you were just a lowly gun building genius and drunken Rendezvous reveler
I am so proud to see that you made it big.
NYT Best list!!! that is COOL!!!! I cannot wait to read these books. I always knew you’d make it big
Taylor, I read Crusade last year and I loved it. I’m still using the Connecticut class pre-dreadnoughts but I’m also using the South Dakota class of 1920, in my own alternate history series, and the early dreadnoughts. What I’ve come up
with, is the following: The reason for the United States keeping the Connecticut class pre-dreadnoughts and the South
Dakota class of 1920, is that the Senate rejected the Washington Naval Treaty, and isn’t bound by its limitations.
Workable?
A friend gave me the first four books Sunday and I just finished them, I’m chomping at the bit to go out and get the fifth! (Slightly unhappy that I have to wait until october for the the sixth)
Excellent read.
I have read the first three books 4 times. I have read the fourth book 6 times and the fifth book 6 times and getting ready to read it a 7th time to be ready for the next book. I like the series very much. Keep it up.
Have not read any books in the series but have listened to them all. Great to listen to. Looking forward to number 6
Have read the HC versions as they have been published and eventually arrived up here in Canada.
Wow.
Great story lines, great characters, etc. “A good read”. And excellent re-reads over the years.
Thank you.
Looking forward to #6 – that’s the hard part… the waiting.
Thanks guys, I appreciate it! I hope you like “Firestorm!” It won’t be long now.
Take care!
I am 2/3 of the way through this book aftr reading the first 4. Firestorm is on the shelf waiting for me to fiish this book.
I dread the day this series comes to a conclusion. There are lots of bad guys to get rid of and a lot of world to rediscover for Capt. Reddy and his crew. As a former Vietnam era destroyerman I can relate to many of the operations aboard the U,S,S, Walker.
It is a rare book or series of books that pull me so deep into the plot and keep me involved. I don’t know what your plans are Taylor Anderson but keep the imagination working and keep up the good work.
With the closing of the Borders bookstores, I happened to walk into a privately-owned bookstore in a train terminal in Chicago two weeks ago. My eyes lit up when I saw a copy of Rising Tides. I’ve devoured this series since the beginning, and this entry does a fantastic job of maintaining the action, intrigue and humor of the preceding novels. One of the few series I literally can’t put down until it’s finished. Write on!
